A bit more about me.
I often go by my last name Rudy. Taken root while playing soccer in college and later preferred after finding a bit of an alter ego in its gender anonymity. Nicknames became a collection garnered over the years. New nicknames give me pause and remind me of the power of affection. The most recent added to the list being Roodles, Rodeo Drive, and Rutabaga.
I take an annual trip to the Pacific Northwest in November with pals to stare at the ocean and chase foggy light along the dramatic coastline. It has become a charming tradition and poetic pause from regular life. 2021 marked year ten in our trip to #thisthesea. A true marking of time with close friends is a ritual I hold dear.
Stand-up comedy and poetry is a go to comfort zone. I return often to the well of Chappelle, Kate Berlant, Mary Oliver, David Whyte, and the ever charming “Comedians in Cars getting Coffee” series. I am also a repeat listener and admirer of The Midnight Miracle series.
My affection for typography placed me in a neon sign bending class. It reinvigorated my attention of movement as bending letters was a full body dance with gravity. It was also thrilling to be so intimate with failure and how practice really would pay off even in the wonkiest of ways. Our eyes correct lumps quickly when gazing at neon glows. Basically, I loved it and the confidence boost from learning something way outside my comfort zone remains an eternal gift. There is always something new to learn.
I spend much of my free time off-screen doing craft projects and learning craft techniques. My latest investment is in a stain-glass window kit. The pandemic found me sewing loon ornaments to the point where I literally have a loonie bin in my apartment.
